As you know, there are a lot of dating websites out there. And for the most part, they are totally honest in the way that they deal with members. In fact, the best dating sites are always very keen to be very open and honest in everything they do. But this isn’t the case with all dating sites. Some of them can be very “naughty” in the way they act, in order to try and get as much money as possible from the public. Which sites are they? Well, we won’t mention names here, but there are certainly quite a few of them around.
Of course, an obvious question is – what exactly do they get up to? Well, there are several “tricks” they can use – the following are just the most common of them.
Inactive members
The best dating sites tell you how recently a member last visited. The accuracy of this varies – some will say “today” or “yesterday”, while other dating sites just say “Within three days” or something similar. This can be very useful for obvious reasons. Some sites, though, deliberately don’t give this indication, to avoid revealing that their apparently massive membership actually includes very many inactive profiles – that is, members who no longer use the site, but who haven’t yet deleted their profile. You should be careful of such sites.
Dummy messages
Sometimes dating sites, even the best dating sites, let you register and create your profile for free, but not read any messages until you pay. These sites might then send messages from fake profiles (essentially employees of the site) to non-paying members, to tempt them into paying to see the message.
Hidden charges
Some sites will promote their low-cost subscriptions, and ask new members to provide a credit card number before registering. The site will then make a substantial one-off “administration” charge as soon as the member has joined. Of course, this charge is mentioned in the site’s small print – but you often have to work very hard to find it, which is something they know most people are unlikely to do.
